Pros and Cons of Multivitamins

Multivitamins are the supplements which are used to fulfill the requirement of nutrients which are not supplied by our diet. There are different doses of different nutrients which our body needs on a daily basis. However, sometimes we are not able to fulfill the requirements due to lack of many food items in our diet. In that case, we are dependent on taking multivitamins which meet the gap of nutrition shortage form the food. Though, there are a number of advantages of taking multivitamins, these come with some disadvantages too which we will discuss in this article of Pros and Cons of Multivitamins.

1. Provides vitamins and minerals:

Sometimes our food cannot meet the daily requirements of essential nutrients and minerals, in that case multivitamins play an important role to prevent the deficiencies. These are the collection of Vitamins like A, B complex, C, D, E and K.

2. Useful for pregnant women:

Doctors advised expecting mothers to take multivitamins on a daily basis as this not only supplies the essential nutrients to the mother body, but also to the fetus for the proper development. However, you should consult with the doctor about the dosage and how to take it.

3. Helps in dealing with stress:

If your body is not deprived of any nutrients, then it will be called a healthy body and you can feel that too. Multivitamins keep your mind and body active after meeting nutrition requirements, which in turn is useful to deal with stress. That is why we should eat  healthy.

4. Gives better health:

Multivitamins help in achieving good health. They are known to increase the body’s immunity to fight against diseases like heart disorders and cancer and also helps in correcting the damage caused by smoking, alcohol and environmental pollution.

1. Overdose:

If you take multivitamins in higher doses than prescribed then you might be at the risk of weight loss, diarrhoea, headache, changes in menstrual cycle, back pain, etc.

2. Gastrointestinal disturbances:

If you take multivitamins empty stomach, then you may feel gastrointestinal disturbances like constipation, loose motions, nausea, etc. Some people have headaches and foul smell in their mouths.

3. Sleep disorders:

If you take multivitamins at night time before going to bed, then it can cause difficulty in sleep. That is why doctors suggest to take it in day time either with breakfast or lunch.

4. Allergic reactions:

Sometimes you may get allergies on the skin due to multivitamins which are mild allergies. It can appear in serious forms like swollen face, difficulty in breathing and chest pain.
